Joan, I have raised two kids all the way through the school situation,
and now have a 3 year old where I face the same dilemmas.
Education is best prompted from the parents, but to have ALL depend on
their individual efforts is placing too great a burden on the nuclear
family.
To me, home schooling is something that is forced upon parents, because
the government refuses to provide the service. 'Self reliance' is
not a good thing, when it is forced on people in terrible circumstances.
I want some help from my neighbors, not some sort of lecture about the
virtues of super-individualism. What on earth is wrong with having
a functional community that sees to educating the younger generation as
a whole?
Capitalist society has defaulted on making a humane environment for its
children. It is more than just the core responsibility of each and
every family. Or each and every school.
The truth of the matter is, capitalist elites want a stupd, uneducated,
illiterate population under their firm control. Dismantling public
education slowly by making it worse and worse, is a conscious strategy
by those above. They know that only a small group of parents can
actually find ways to home school. We shouldn't have to be forced
into these dilemmas. It's an exceptional cruelty to the poor.
We are losing across the world a basic level of social ecology
maintained in the past. This is the first level of The Crash
forcing us to live like animals in a jungle. That of taking away
decent social environments to raise our families in. Forced home
schooling is part of this trend to anti-social decay and atomized
society.
It's a return to the past where the poor were kept illiterate.

<I'm sorry that I can't abstract from this long post, but Tony's point
of view is alienated, apparently, by the very concept of self-reliance.
Or perhaps he only sees black and white where the rest of us are seeing
thousands of shades of color and tones.
Tony, it is not a case of having to do something, but rather preferring
to do it for oneself, in order to get it right the first time. Do you
really want to trust the state to teach your child ethical values? Do
you have any children?
I'm sure I'm mistaking your words to mean that you actually want the
government to provide you with all the necessities of life. Do you want
it to tell you what to think, as well? I'm getting the impression that
this is the case. I suspect you have never lived in a totalitarian
household. Strident? not really, more like Petulant.>
