+1 we did that for OpenNLP, and I find it quite useful to once in a while
look back a bit further if there is an issue.

Do you use subversion over at SF?

+1 this sounds like a concrete first step. One thing to consider too is 
producing
an svndump from SF.net if you guys are interested in preserving the existing
code revision history.
