It almost sounds like they're doing all their transaction control from the
client application.  Menu -> select item -> begin transaction -> insert
insert insert update select select insert update select -> commit -> unlock
all affected tables and let some other poor connection access them.

I wonder how many of the system developers will leave it on theeir CVs.
