I go and check "cookies" very often and see where people have been going and yes, we have suspended Internet privileges for one or two patrons for accessing porno. I gave them a warning first and then suspended their privileges for a number of months. One returned just yesterday. I checked the "cookies" on that machine and he had been naughty again, but the sites that he visited do not have large graphics so someone walking by probably would not be offended. I will check again after today since he is here even as I write this. And if he has gone to other places, he will no longer be able to use the Internet here. We do have a policy against cell phone use in the Library and we enforce it by asking patrons to please go outside. We also have signs posted. We do not ask people to sign out if they take a break from the computer. We do ask them to tell a staff member if they are taking a break as the policy states that any computer unattended for 15 minutes will be reassigned. While we are on the subject of computers, has anyone had to suspend Internet privileges for patrons who download pornography to the hard drive, or surf to sexually explicit sites? What are your policies toward gambling over the Internet? How can you prove someone is running a personal business from the computers in the Library? I suspect a patron is doing this in my Library. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, February 01, 2002 8:29 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Cell phones This is a message from CTLS-L. Do you require them to sign out on their computer if they leave it for more than a bathroom break? We have had people go outside to talk on their phones for 15-20 minutes and just get up and leave the computer and no one knew for sure whether they were really gone or just outside. Same thing goes for cigarette breaks. The board adopted this policy after we received several complaints from other patrons. We even have signs with a line through the cell phone picture. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen though! Some people talk constantly on their cell phones while using the public Internet or word processing terminals, and others stand at the circ desk or PAC making calls to find out what item they were supposed to be looking for or picking it. Does anyone bar cell phone use in the library? Or do you have signs that direct patrons/customers to areas where the use is deemed acceptable? Deanna Deanna Frazee Director of Library Services 205 E.
