We proctor a lot of exams and do not charge. We have a proctor file that all the exams go in so that everyone on staff knows where they are. There are also instructions and passwords for the online exams in the file, again so that all staff members know where they are and how to access each school. We require the student to make an appointment to take the exam, so that we are ready and expecting them to be there. We have occasionally had to ship overnight, but the students understand that they are responsible for that cost, and no one has complained. (Have you heard the saying "A lack of preparation on YOUR part does not constitute an emergency on MY part!) We notify the student as soon as the exams arrive and it is up to them to get in here to take them. Some schools do send all the exams for the semester at once, but we just leave them in the proctor file until the student is ready for them. Actually that means less paperwork, since you don't have to fill out a request for every exam. We really haven't had any problems that would warrant discontinuing the service. Everyone really appreciates us doing it, and some have made donations to the library since we don't actually charge. (One guy gave us $10,000 a few years ago. We had no idea he had that kind of money, but it turned out he is the owner of Curves, Int. and was completing his degree in nutrition through correspondence.) Whose knows, it could pay off in the long run. In the past we have been asked to proctor tests a few times a year and it was a simple process. The test was sent to us, a librarian signed the forms, handed the test to the student and mailed it back in the self-addressed postage paid envelope. It was a service we were glad to offer since there is no place else in town that does this. Apparently that simple process is now way to quaint. In the past few months we have received tests by e-mail, fax & .pdf files. One student was ill and by the time he got here to take the test it had to be over-nighted back and a staff member had to scramble to get the package ready and race to the post office to mail it at a cost of $13.50. The student was shocked at the cost but did pay the money back. Another out-of-state-school sent 6 tests that will take their student the next year to complete. We are now responsible for keeping up with test packets until the student need to take his exams. Is this sort of thing happening at your libraries?
