Ever read "Or All the Seas With Oysters" by Avram Davidson (about 1957)? It's
the story of a man who discovers that there is, in fact, an alien lifeform
existing in our midst--a *mechanical* lifeform... Have you ever noticed that
*you never have both enough paperclips and enough coathangers at the same
time*? And ask any cop...every so often they'll find brand-new, *unclaimed*
bicycles in the parks, ones that no one has reported stolen. What's the
connection? Well, consider this: *what is the only machine that has sexes, and
also comes in both juvenile and adult forms?* That's right--the bicycle! Now
just suppose that there is a form of machine life, with sexes, capable of
reproducing itself: the paperclip is the larva...the coathanger is the
pupa...the bicycle is the adult... Look VERY carefully at that paperclip in
your desk...
Bob, looking over my shoulder cautiously...there's a coathanger in that closet
that's been giving me VERY STRANGE looks every time I go in there...
