I am convinced that at least some of the black-clad "anarchists" in Seattle
are agents provocateurs. However, just whom they work for is another
question altogether. Their assignment is clearly to discredit the legitimate
nonviolent anti-WTO movement, which is one of the most broadly-based
movements in U.S. history. Their "sponsors" could be any of several U.S.
government agencies--FBI, CIA, military intelligence (remember the fake
"civilian demonstrators" from the Urban Warrior exercises? Was this what
*they* were practicing for?); they could also be working for one or more
multinational corporations, or for assorted foreign governments. Or perhaps
the answer is "All of the above."
Also, as a longtime student of nonviolent anarchism, I am extremely annoyed
at the use of these punks to smear the honorable name "anarchist." The big
parade on Tuesday included the IWW, and the Wobblies are *true* anarchists.
It's a fool's errand to try to make the news media see the difference
between real anarchists like the Wobblies and those nihilists in Nike
sneakers who trashed Niketown, but at least we in the movement owe it to
ourselves and our sisters and brothers to be aware of the distinction. True
anarchism scares the shit out of the Oligarchy; unthinking nihilism only
serves the Oligarchy's purposes.
