nessie - and because children are children their recollections of events
are even more skewed than those of adults. Yet what weighs in the balance
here?
Do we sit smugly on the hilltop of our evidential standards or do we lend a
gentle ear and reach out a tender hand?
When we deal with children or adults who don't recover their memories until
decades later, we need to keep in mind ... what kind of evidence is even
possible in situations like that? What else do they have to offer us as
proof beside their very brokenness?
If JonBenet Ramsey had survived the sexual games that night, it is highly
unlikely that she would have been able to recall a thing about them until
years or decades later. Would we then condemn her because she didn't have
the presence of mind take pictures in the basement?
Do we tell her, "Tough - you can't prove it - we won't believe it. Go
away, get a job, get a life." She'd be forced to accept that and she'd
hobble along or she'd die. And we'd have a world with an underground of
desperate tortured people who have a story to tell but we won't listen
because they can't prove it because they were helpless children when it
happened.
It makes for the perfect crime. Torturing children is the perfect crime.
Even I don't believe that most survivors have the evidence to put their perps
in jail, but I will be very careful to hear them and lean in favor of their
credibility. If that's all we can do, then maybe their hobbling will be a
little less painful. If that's the best we can give our world's broken
children, it isn't much to ask.
