I think I've finally found the source of my problems with focus that seemed to get worse in newer versions of ctwm and were the main blocker for not updating the version shipped with NetBSD by default - my config file enabled SloppyFocus. SloppyFocus in ctwm seems to enable some non-default behavior that is different from what other window managers call "sloppy focus" (focus follows mouse movement instead of clicks, the default in ctwm already). For example, with SloppyFocus enabled programs like xev can never obtain keyboard focus and focus is not lost when moving the cursor outside of a window. Anyone know anything about this? It should probably be documented.
