I tried it again a few times just now, and the first few times didn't
all work but after that it seemed to work consistently.

I tried in particular "wmctrl -c :SELECT:", "wmctrl -c :ACTIVE:" and a
"wmctrl -i -c 0x640000c" which all worked (I found the window's ID with
xprop; the WM_CLIENT_LEADER is in simple cases the window itself).
I used simple windows like xterm, xmagi and gvim.
