What I do to work around this brain damage is to tell gnome-session to
run my .xinitrc file, which is run in the background and which runs xrdb
several times and does a "sleep" before running the last xrdb.
The sleep duration is set empirically, of course. Also whenever my
.xinitrc wants to start an xterm, it first loads the `xrdb' and then
runs the xterm, hoping that Gnome won't reset the resources just between
the two commands.
Yuck!
