Rex,
I think the dhcp thing is set up ok, I was told somewhere else to go to
/etc/conf.d/net and make sure that 'ifconfig_eth0=( "dhcp" )' was there
- it is.

I didn't get anything with a user name and password and I asked them
about it and they said I didn't need it.

Yes, I saw that Robert had already been there. I should have looked further down my list. As you know by now your ifconfig command says that you have no IP address. I am not sure that your Netmask is correct, but that is probably because you are not getting assigned an IP.

Your inability to ping may be related to not having a "return" address (an IP). So the first thing to operate on is the IP address problem.

I just saw that you turned on the interface and have an IP address and net mask.

Your operating system may also need to re-read some of the conf files to get everything on track Try re-running your init script ( or rebooting). Then try pinging anything, it does not matter. I usually use "www.yahoo.com". If you ping and you get "can't resolve" something it is because you don't have a connection to a domain name server (DNS) which translates written names to IP addresses. This is sometimes the fault of the ISP, they sometimes change which machines are their DNS servers so you may need to confirm that you have the correct DNS address (or get the IP of a reliable one from the list).

I don't know Gentoo so all I can do is to point you to: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-quickinstall.xml
which you probably already know about because to install Gentoo from scratch means you had to have followed some instructions (am I correct?) because all I know about Gentoo is that you have to do everything by hand. I gather there are no nice installation GUI and scripts.
