since you apparently missed it the first time, i have re-edited my original
statement in all-caps above. :)

xfce might be better.

is this for you, or "normal" users we're trying to wean away from windows?

if for you, use whatever makes you happy.

if for "normal" users we're trying to wean away from windows, i would push
kde, but that's impossible with this ancient, underpowered hardware. ice is -
as i stated above - way too different & weird. actually, so is kfce, since
it's based on gnome's ideas about desktops (which are quite bizarre).

have you looked at this?

http://www.simplekde.org

it's a stripped-down kde.

or this?

http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8239

another stripped-down kde.

interestingly, auditor - one of the absolute best live cds for security -
switched from icewm to a stripped down kde.

have you looked at this distro, which is specifically for old hardware & uses
kde?

VectorLinux
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=vector

in fact, now you've got me interested. if you have one of those old boxes,
robert, & you bring it to the next cwe-lug meeting, i'll install debian & kde
& strip it to the bone & see how it runs. i'll bet we can get a decent box in
shape. we could also try out vectorlinux. let me know if you want me to d/l
it.
