Normal users, i.e. MS Windows users or complete neophytes. > if for "normal" users we're trying to wean away from windows, i > would push > kde, but that's impossible with this ancient, underpowered > hardware. ice is - > as i stated above - way too different & weird. actually, so is > kfce, since > it's based on gnome's ideas about desktops (which are quite bizarre). > > have you looked at this? Nope. None of them, yet. I'm still exploring the solution space, which appears to be quite large. > in fact, now you've got me interested. if you have one of those old > boxes, > robert, & you bring it to the next cwe-lug meeting, i'll install > debian & kde > & strip it to the bone & see how it runs. Funny you should say that. Over the weekend I did an install blitz, installing DSL, FeatherLinux, Morphix, Ubuntu, and Debian one after the other: wipe drive, install, test, repeat. BTW, Debian has come a long way - much nicer to install than before. Configuring packages during an install still annoys me, but I guess I'll live with it. The distro I liked the most was Ubuntu. A long install, but that's OK. Was then able to install KDE and IceWM via synaptic. DSL and FeatherLinux work good enough as a live CD. But installed, they really don't cut it. Some stuff was just a PITA, like virtual terminals not restarting. Morphix needs a bit of polish. The docs didn't quite make sense. But once I figured out the sample scripts, I was able to make a new ISO pretty easily. I might spend a bit more time playing with this distro. As for your idea of bringing a low-end box, I like it. You mention Debian, but I'm wondering if Ubuntu can be installed stripped-down? > i'll bet we can get a decent box in shape. we could also try out > vectorlinux. let me know if you want me to d/l > it.
