Normal users, i.e. MS Windows users or complete neophytes.

Nope. None of them, yet. I'm still exploring the solution space,
which appears to be quite large.

Funny you should say that. Over the weekend I did an install blitz,
installing DSL, FeatherLinux, Morphix, Ubuntu, and Debian one after
the other: wipe drive, install, test, repeat. BTW, Debian has come
a long way - much nicer to install than before. Configuring packages
during an install still annoys me, but I guess I'll live with it.

The distro I liked the most was Ubuntu. A long install, but that's
OK. Was then able to install KDE and IceWM via synaptic.

DSL and FeatherLinux work good enough as a live CD. But installed,
they really don't cut it. Some stuff was just a PITA, like virtual
terminals not restarting.

Morphix needs a bit of polish. The docs didn't quite make sense.
But once I figured out the sample scripts, I was able to make a new
ISO pretty easily. I might spend a bit more time playing with this
distro.

As for your idea of bringing a low-end box, I like it. You mention
Debian, but I'm wondering if Ubuntu can be installed stripped-down?

Downloading VL now.

If that's true. FLOSS is doomed.
