Based on a suggestion from M, I tried another install of Ubuntu, this
time doing a server install, which installs just a base system.
Doing the server install was much faster than a regular install.
Once that was in place, I ran an apt-get to get all the components
necessary for xfce4. It works, mostly. I just need to figure out
how to customize the interface and add a few more packages, e.g.
firefox, OOo2, and a few games, plus customize the theme/look-and-
feel to be a bit more Windowsy.

Installing Ubuntu creates a nice migration path:

  Win98 + FF + OOo2 ->
    Ubuntu + xfce + FF + OOo2 ->
      Ubuntu + KDE/Gnome + FF + OOo2 ->

Thoughts?
