Robert. When I had ATT dialup I used KPPP for several distros. Also, with libranet 2.7 there was a ppp configuration tool. I seem to remember an ID and a Password assigned by ATT, was required. Also, ATT was using CHAP. External modems worked. Internal had to be hardware as I never did get a winmodem to configure. Identity of the modem was different in different distros, like /dev/modem, or /dev/ttyS0, ttyS1.
