Hi all, helping a neighbor upgrade a PC. It is a HP Pavilion a564n.

Here is a link to the specifications page for the motherboard:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00041640&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=&product=408062

Here is my question. Under Memory it says:

Maximum Memory Motherboard maximum:4 GB (4 x 1 GB)
Maximum HP recommended memory: 2 GB (4 x 512 MB)

Why does HP recommend only half of what the mainboard can handle?

They currently have only 1 512MB RAM (in the first of four slots) -- is
there any reason *not* to install a single 1GB RAM into the second of
the four slots?

Thanks,

Theresa
