You don't by chance happen to have another version of Pidgin installed on that machine? Other option might be to do a purge remove? Other other option might be to update Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04? I'm sure you have your reasons for hanging on to 7.10, but it does lose support in a few months. 8.04 is a LTS, so that's good. Did you try Pidgin on 8.04 already?
