Yes ... luckily, the effect I wanted was the old, grainy, wibbly, look
of the "HELP! HELP!" screens in the silent movies when the heroine was
tied to the train track, and the puffing engine was on its diabolical
way.

So what I did was very klunky, but I was very short on time -- I made
little OO Impress slideshows, of the intro bit for the film itself, and
an intro bit for each video in the film.

Then, I played back the OO slideshows, full screen, with my digital
camera filming the playback (thus the shaky, grainy look -- I kept the
light dim and didn't use a tripod). Then I took those videos, inserted
them in the proper order, and presto-change-o! I was able to take the
package to the post office this morning; with two-day express delivery,
it will definitely make it there before Christmas Eve.

Testing the resulting .avi file -- on a separate machine, Ubuntu 8.04,
no problems. In a VirtualBox Windows 2000 machine, using the embedded
Windows Media player, no problem.

I am sure there are ways to make simple animated .avi files ... I just
ran out of time to find solutions.

I continue to be impressed with Linux's simple elegance, though ...
who'da thunk it would be as simple as concatenating image files
together, to make one continuous video? (Of course, it did take the
tweak to get sound and video re-synched)
