I referenced Windows in my original mail because the original article I sent said NOTHING about Macs (or Linux, or any other OS besides Windows). Congrats on doing more research.
My original email was fine. It is overwhelming a Windows problem, and, frankly, after doing a bit more reading, I'm beginning to doubt the Mac numbers. If you read the report at http://www.m86security.com/documents/pdfs/security_labs/cybercriminals_target_online_banking.pdf, there's this quote & then a table: "In addition to the included exploits, the author of the toolkit enables his customers to review and analyze incoming traffic." In that table, it includes Macs, Playstations, Wiis, Linux, and others. I find it very hard to believe that the same Trojan runs on all of those operating systems. But maybe you do. Symantec has a nice page about Trojan.Zbot (the same trojan) at http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2010-011016-3514-99. I quote: "Systems Affected: Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000". That seems pretty clear. But maybe you know more. Further, the quote you ranted about, in which the author of the original article suggests stopping use of the Net, was obviously tongue in cheek, as the author made clear. But maybe you take everything literally. Was the article FUD? I don't think so. Inaccurate? Depends what you're willing to believe, I guess. Whatever. Scott -- R.
