Revolver tribute to shot Beatle
THIS statue in memory of John Lennon, who was shot dead
in New York 20 years ago, was unveiled in Trafalgar Square
yesterday as his In My Life was chosen by songwriters as the
greatest yet written.
The footballer David Ginola unveiled the sculpture in
an event organised by the Non-Violence Foundation International,
set up in Sweden in 1993 to stop young people turning to crime.
It is opening in Britain.
The 1965 song In My Life, which appeared on the Beatles'
album Rubber Soul, was honoured by songwriters including Sir
Paul McCartney, in a poll by the magazine Mojo. Sir Paul's own
work Here, There and Everywhere, came fourth. The top ten - and
the artists most identified with them - were:
1 In My Life, The Beatles; 2 (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction,
Rolling Stones; 3 Over The Rainbow, Judy Garland; 4 Here, There
And Everywhere, The Beatles; 5 Tracks Of My Tears, The Miracles;
6 The Times They Are A Changing, Bob Dylan; 7 Strange Fruit,
Billie Holiday; 8 I Can't Make You Love Me, Bonnie Raitt; 9 People
Get Ready, The Impressions; 10 You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin',
The Righteous Brothers

The picture that accompanies the article shows a nicely
sculpted Colt Python with an extraordinarily long barrel that
has been tied in a knot.

It is not clear whether this statue was merely "unveiled"
n Trafalgar Square or whether it is to be a perminent fixture
there, if the latter is true then it is a disgrace and I doubt
it will survive another march unscathed.
