In 1997 0r early 98 I was a member of BASC and attended a road show at the
Norwich Showground with several friends. We had been promised a meeting
about the Bill to ban handguns but in fact absolutely nothing happened. After
kicking up a polite rumpus an official stood up and rather half-heartedly
told the crowd that they really ought to write to their MP's, it would have
helped if any of them had been listening.

I didn't renew my membership and wrote a stiffish letter to them explaining
why (I didn't get a reply). They sent me a circular about a year later,
after my handguns had gone asking me to rejoining because ~ The Time for
Action is Now! I again wrote back telling them that as far as I was
concerned the time for action had been 18 months earlier.

Are they worth rejoining? From the sound of the internecine fighting the
answer seems to be no.

Whatever happens they have got
The Maxim Gun, and we have not.

Well, BASC is a field sports organisation, and handguns are not really
used that much in field sports. They did manage to broaden the exemption
for expanding ammo over what was in the original Bill.

I still don't really understand the BASC's lack of action back in 1987
and 1988 as the Firearms (Amendment) 1988 had a pretty profound impact
on fieldsports although perhaps someone at BASC can provide more details.

Steve.
