I am thinking of visiting one of the big civilian shooting academies in the
US, either Gunsite, LFI or Thunder Ranch.
Before I invest the cash, can anyone make a personal recommendation or give
me an opinion on these places?

I only have experience of LFI on tour to the UK about 5 years
ago. The emphasis was on legal justification for the use of force and
shooting techniques which are likely to be practical in a stress situation.
LFI's instructional practices seemed to be effective and better than UK
military or police methods. The "Stressfire" books give an idea of what to
expect.
IMHO LFI would be of most use in a civilian or police environment as opposed
to combat or survival.
