I had an old Lab that developed this problem.  It was merely that a symptom.  At
first the only  symptom.  All of a sudden one day, he became frantic with pain and
was jumping on the couch and all over the place.   However, it was a symptom of
something wrong with his spine.  We medicated him for as long as the meds worked and
then, when we could no longer control his pain, we put him to sleep.
