My thoughts:

I don't know what was the original thought behind using lower-case only,
so I can't really comment on that, but I do think there should be some
consistency to where it's used. Maybe there should be some exceptions,
like acronyms and names, but then all acronyms and names should be in
(initial) upper case. Currently (and before the recent changes) acronyms
like URL, PNG, FPS, TIFF, ISO, EXIF and names like LaTeX, Canon, and
Nikon are in all lower-case.

As for exceptions: I'm not sure why there SHOULD be exceptions. We can't
really argue that "acronyms are supposed to be in all-upper-case" or
"names are supposed to have an initial upper-case letter", because first
words in sentences are supposed to, too, and darktable seems to have
decided to ignore that (which is OK, in my opinion).

Oh, BTW, there are a few acronyms that I DO see a reason for having as
an exception. Acronyms with mixed case, such as Lab, sRGB, or where the
letters refer to a mathematical value, such as XYZ, RGB, Lab, where the
case may make a contextual difference.

What ever is decided, I'd like to volunteer to add some consistency to
the strings, but before that can be done, we need to have a clear
decision to what should be in lower-case and what shouldn't:

- First letter of a sentence/string
- Acronyms
- Acronyms with mixed case
- Names
