Thank you Patrick ... you are always a fountain of knowledge. I am
surprised that such a basic item is located differently in the various
versions.

since you provide little information about your system and/or darktable,
this answer may not be what you are looking for, but that's on you.
on the latest linux master at the time writing this, it resides in the
import bar, presets -> preferences
tomorrow may be different.
