but *which* darktablerc indicates "1"?  the *original* darktablerc which
is part of the package install and not local to *your* user account comes
with "1" as default.  when you make changes to your darktable
configuration, they are saved in the darktablerc *local* to your
<user-name>.  and it is not the same as the original version provided on
package installation.  

as I said, the linux "user" version is at ~/.config/darktable/darktablerc
