I'm not saying that I'm trying to change the levels shown. I am saying
that when I open darktable, the preferences show 3 levels as previously
noted, yet darktablerc shows 1 level. No changes have been made in
preferences or in darktablerc since 3.4.0 came out on 12/24/20. Just
sayin'.

"3" in preferences, yet darktablerc still shows levels set to "1". I'm
using the general release of darktable 3.4.0, not a daily compilation.

Yet, if I look in darktablerc, I see . It appears that Preferences

After a rebuild I am finding that I am not seeing multiple folder levels

I think that I am observing the same issue with master compiled yesterday
(3.5.0+426~g3e30462e8) on both Windows and linux.
Under 'collect images - folders' the 'selection box' is now a single row in
height with a scroll bar on the right, rather than the old drop down list
and this is independent of the number of folder levels selected in the
preferences. I have yet to explore backwards in commits, but there seem to
have been a number of changes to 'collect' recently. Maybe this change is
intentional, but I find it very inconvenient.
on further investigation, I find no setting the the
configuration/gear-wheel setting menu(s) any more for depth of directories
processed during import, but one may edit ~/.config/darktable/darktablerc
and adjust "show_folder_levels=#". Mine is set to "show_folder_levels=5".
preferences are stored in darktablerc and you must exit darktable, then
make changes to darktablerc, then reopen darktable for the changes to be
active.
I am on linux and using master. I don't know what operating system or
version of dt you use, display may not be the same and making assumptions
*only* leads to more confusion.
close dt, edit darktablerc to set "show_folder_levels=" to what you
desire, save and reopen dt. do you now have what you want? may be a bug
that is fixed in 3.4.1 when it is released. may even be documented.
works for me on master
