That's in no case a universal description of individuals!!!
One could - out of others - argue that to be able to suicid is not a
good reason to grant everybody a gun pretexting giving him the choice...
Darktable is not at all a backup soft (and not a hot and cold water
provider too) so why implement in the ability to empty a card? On my
opinion even the import feature is not relevant. I don't think it's
Darktable duty to implement such features so, if ever, the idiotproof
way is certainly the wise one.
To import my images I will always use - and recommand to use - a
dedicated soft such as Rapid Photo Dowloader which is able to import,
rename and backup my images in a single shot and alas does'nt make
coffee.
The only way I imagine to give to lack of experience a chance to lost
images would be to dig such a choice of a "feature" somewhere deep in
the preferences with a "not recommended" warning perhaps along with a
"why" explanation. Too much work for too low usefulness, I mean.
And yes, I don't empty my cards before an overnight so my harddrives are
backuped too.

There are probably other import'n-backup softs on the market. I'm just
using this one for four or five years now, which is an eternity in
computing. :-)
P.P.S. I've never seen during my 55 years long photographing life - I'm
67 - any darkroom offered with a lift or a travolator or a stacker or
even a little yellow bucket... ;-)
