I think the main problem here is that most computer users don't unmount their memory card properly when used in the computer. This will be no problem when they only read from the card, but if they write to the card the filesystem will be with errors if they remove the card before the changes are commited. These errors will be solved when the memory card are formatted in the camera.

The procedure above is hard to communicate to the users. Then it's easier to tell the users to always format their memory card in the camera. That is the reason why it's recommended in my opinion.

I have never experienced faulty memory card even if I don't format the card on the camera.

For Dt the question should be. Should the program be an "all in one stop solution" like the Adobe product Lightroom? If so, I recommend that you also implement a option to rename og delete files from the memory card if the users want it. Personally I use Digikam before Dt so I don't need it, but I'm not "all
users". :)

That's fully right : it's widely recommanded in every litterature to only format a card in camera, and to do it as often than necessary. So deleting files on the computer side is not useful nor recommanded.
