I pretty much agree with this philosophy

I do not use the import function as I use exiftool to write GPS information 
into the RAW 
image. Yes, I know, there is a risk in doing that but I have not had a 
corrupted image 
yet. And if an image is corrupted, the original is still on the card. I only 
format the card 
at the end of a trip (I do Australia Outback landscapes) or when I run out of 
space.

I also take an external hard drive with me so that the images are also copied 
to that. 
Paranoid? Perhaps, but when you drive ~2,500km just to get there, losing your 
images is not something I want to happen.
