I have some RAF files that show nasty distortion that isn't present in the JPEG files.

There's a wealth of shadow detail in the RAF files that isn't in the jpegs. So much so I've pretty much given up shooting jpegs. However on one of my older one when I was experimenting I have RAF === Raw Image Full Size : 3328x2464 Raw Image Width : 3328 Raw Image Height : 2464 Exif Image Width : 2048 Exif Image Height : 1536 JPG === Exif Image Width : 3264 Exif Image Height : 2448 So yes, if you look just at the EXIF size.. But what are you looking at in the RAW with the exif size? Isn't that the "embedded jpeg preview"? The "Preview Image" entry. Mention at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_image_format <quote> * Optionally a reduced-size image in JPEG format, which can be used for a quick preview </quote> The "reduced size" is the part which explains what you are observing. What you are working with is the raw data.
