The distortion I'm speaking of is obvious curves in straight lines in the raw, 
but not in the out of camera jpeg. 

I don't expect the raw to be the same as the out of camera jpegs, except in the 
appearance of lines in the scene. 

I will post screenshots showing what I mean.

What does 'show nasty distortion' mean?

When viewed?  How?

I have RAF files that look almost black under Darktable default import 
but the embedded jpeg looks OK under Konqueror.  But when I adjust the 
EV/profile under darktable or Uraw of Rawtherapee the depth of colour is 
much better than the embedded jpeg.

I've got a number of 'backlit' images that I've turned into great prints 
by adjusting the the ev and profile.  That's what you're supposed to do.

The conversion algorithm of the camera is naive.



What do you expect?
No, I take that back, its clear that you expect the un-adjusted RAW to 
look like the processed jpeg.   That doesn't make sense.
