I think the darktable UI should try to be as consistent as possible, to be accessible for new users. I understand that the group actions can cause data loss, if a user doesn't understand that he is working on the group. But this shouldn't be solved by adding more special cases to the user interface. One, you could make it more obvious that the group is selected (maybe even change the image frame to some kind of 3D-looking stack?) Also, you could add a safety dialog to group actions, "Do you really want to delete 237 images?"
