I tested again with DNG created by x3f_extract. At least darktable now opens 
the DNG. But they have a huge red tint which basically makes them unusable.

By the way, I also checked the 2 different lightroom DNG versions found here: 
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/56181429
The version "Camera RAW 4.6 and higher" opens fine in DT now. but the version 
"Camera RAW 5.4 and higher" has the same red tint as the DNGs created by 
x3f_extract.
