Hi Tom,

Although one cannot discount some weird problem with Vista and the Novell
network, I would put an incompatibility like that way down the list of things
to be looking for, no matter how obscure the problem looks...

Did you have a look at the folder name on the mapped drive to see if it was in
8.3 format... It could be that the WP files are in a folder in 8.3 format but
the DP file are in a folder with the same drive letter but with a long file
name somewhere in the path... This of course is only a problem if the create
long is turned off... on either the server or the Vista machine...

I have not been involved with Novell for a few years so I am not sure about the
issue of Long file Names.

Personally I think it will have something to do with file or directory names.
Failing all the related issues to this then I would start looking at forums and
and support document on both Novell and Microsoft web sites... and also at the
Novell client settings, for Burst mode... and network file caching...

Good luck
Brian

Yes I do have connection to network using Novell's new netware drivers for
Vista.

Yes I do have rights to mapped drive and, in fact, I can run wp51 and open
and close and save changes to wp5.1 files without any problem -- folders on the
same mapped drive letter.

In fact, I can start dp that resides in the exact same mapped drive letter
folder, but when it comes up, it does not display the app that resides in the
same mapped drive folder.

So, you think IPX issue is a red herring, and I don't know enough about what
lack of IPX means -- I was just taking a wild guess with no understanding.

I think this all adds up to a mystery caused by incompatibility of Netware
drivers for vista with DP's STR file or something in DP that doesn't recognize
its own STR if it is located on a Novell Network accessed from a Vista
workstation.

Thank you all for your comments, but I guess we are beating this to death
without progress.

    Tom,

If you can see and browse the network from the vista machine then that
means that you are connected or logged into the server Thus you must have a
Novell client loaded on the vista machine and making the connection. Now
weather the client is connecting with IP or IPX does not really matter. I have
avoided vista so far so I do not no if Novell has made a client for vista. I
do know that sense Netware 5.1 connectivity by IP has been possible and with
6.0 and 6.5 you have to check a box in order to use IPX.

Are there any rights set up that lets you browse a network drive but not
run or write to the drive. Would it make any difference if you ran dp locally
or can you? Does vista have a firewall stopping you?

      Matt,

Although I have a high degree of suspision that IPX is reason I cannot
see dp apps, my knowledge of such matters is so limited that I was hoping
someone could connect the dots for me and say for sure that dp and novell are
not compatible with Vista generally but here is a work around. I guess that is
not going to happen. In fact, I came to the conclusion only because of
postings I found that you also found and forwarded.

      But thanks again for trying.

No, I did not have that problem - sorry I can't be more helpful. I only
have two stupid thoughts:
1) I assume you are persistently assigning drive letters and not using
UNC? I don't think I can get unc to work in dos (errr, cmd window).
2) I don't suppose the old shell /nt= switch would help?

I see there are some excruciating posts about this ipx issue:
http://tinyurl.com/32xyfu
http://tinyurl.com/3c97vl

The end of the last one says you can do ipx-less clients in NW6.5, but
not sure if that works for you. Perhaps not. I bailed on Groupwise and
NW a long time ago, so my NW knowledge has evaporated.

Thanks Matt but I think Novell experience may be different. The problem
is seeing the app after starting DP -- no apps appear listed on network
folder, even though one is clearly present -- it just does not show in
DP -- but does show in any file manager. Also, if I try to create a new
database on network folder, it errors out. I'll need to look at error
code if you need that, but DP just does not like network folder even
though I am able to start DP from the same network folder.

I think I have a handle on shortcut setup -- although I am starting DP
from WP Office Shell 3.1. DP starts fine as I mentioned earlier, it
just does not display any apps in the same directory that DP is started
from and same as designated directory in Shell setup.

So, I wonder if at anytime during your network setup did you run into
problem where you could start DP but could not see any apps displayed?
If yes, what setting changed that?

Thanks again,

Tom

I use Vista on W2K3 server (tcp/ip). Vista is a pita to set up, but
once set up was fine.

Not sure I remember all I did to set it up, here is some of it. You
can specify compatibility mode when you run a batch file/shortcut, I
assume you messed with that already. If not, start there.

HP printers need a new universal printing driver, and you need to
install it in dynamic mode, not traditional mode. I think.

Protected root directory, so I made a c:\batch directory.

Some shortcuts work better if you select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

Use SETX instead of SET to set variables (SETX is sticky, so one time
only)

For help files, see http://tinyurl.com/2n2z7g

I think I had some other tricks too if this list is too short.

Subject: [Dataperf] DP Vista Novell

I posted a question earlier regarding use of DP on Novell Netware 6.5
network from a Vista Ultimate workstation.

I cannot see the network STR selection after launching DP. This is a
huge problem since law office has been running client.case DP database
since 1992.

DP launches fine, I can even select a DP App located on the
workstation, I just can't see -- so cannot select -- any DP application

  located on the server.

First, is anyone using DP App located on any type network server from a

  Vista workstation?

Has anyone found a work around for the problem with Novell network from

Vista work stations -- other than virtual win98 machine solution which
I've already employed -- but not really satisfactorily?

Does anyone have theory on why files can be viewed using vista from
just about any file manager but once DP launches it cannot see its own
application from within DP?

Could lack of IPX support for Vista and For Netware Vista Drivers have
anything to do with this?

Thanks.
