Lincoln,

I thought it was a perl problem as when I googled for the err string
I got back several examples of how to workaround it. But then I built
the src on slackware and I did not have to modify anything in the perl
build directory. Nada.

Suffice to say, I had a hell of a time building on redhat but no problem
whatsoever on slackware. No idea why there should be such a dramatic
difference.

Just now I looked for any redhat log notes that I had made but I do recall
when I finally opted to remove 8.0 I simply deleted everything in disgust.
I had tried building from perl source on 8.0, result: a nightmare. I did
eventually succeed but the same problem (script hanging) occurred.
I tried using the redhat src tarball (rpm) and turned off multithreading
but still had the same problem...this was also non-trivial (as when you
change one thing on redhat it breaks ten others).

After awhile I realised that I was seeing diminishing returns and so gave
up (bravely though - I might add).

Sorry I can't be more help.
