Just for the record, keep in mind that some applications would not only start unconfigured, but completely stop working on a gnome2 desktop. (panel applets, apps drawing directly on the root window,...)
Those apps are not part of gnome, but they need an upgrade in order to work with a gnome2 desktop. The conversion is far from complete and making gnome2 the only contender in unstable would invalidate those packages. Of course this is a temporary situation in most cases.
