As a person familiar to LDAP, you are in better position to answer. Can you
imagine realistic configuration when query in some category/service/database
(alternative words used for the same term in man pages) needs more than one
request to LDAP servers, some request mail fail, and incomplete result still
may be useful? (Similar to failed A DNS request when IPv6 addresses from AAAA
I don't imagine, I actually used such multiple requests with partial
informations gathered from different databases. It was an environment with
micro$oft + oracle + openldap + some I don't remember. It is far from a
DNS request but for me LDAP seems closer to application layer than to
system layer.
- Was it related to NSS?
- Did you faced cases when request to some server failed, but with info
from other queries, overall status was considered as successful despite
some missed data?
- Were that errors intermittent ones, so the same requests sent a few
seconds later had good chance to succeed? (It means that cache entries
for partial success quickly become stale.)
The question is whether "hosts" category and its DNS plugin may be
generalized to other categories.
