Why is that? If I understand correctly, it would be due to the .Net framework, right? C# is defined by Microsoft who defined the ISO statndard for C#: what I meant was that if Delphi sells a DotNet version on a non Windows OS, then, being a company which is paid for installing DotNet (even in emulation) on say Macintosh or even Linux, there could be an issue of intellectual copyright (like Sun/Java): AFAIK copyright laws hold between the USA and Europe; Any Delphi realisation on the Mac has to have its Web alternative (with a functionality similar to AspNet) or its not viable for professional use; My point is that it has to be commercial: from what I have seen of Lazarus/FreePascal, I could not propose it as a solution to any of my past clients working onWindows as a true Delphi alternative: the OpenSource approach is not valid (see the Kylix debacle!); >"Lazarus" is just at the tip of my tongue, and I think it would be a solution. >I see lot's of Mac users on Lazarus' forums and they seem happy with it - >have you checked the situation and are *sure* about the XServer issue? My point is really: "How could Delphi work on the Mac?" not that Lazarus would be an alternative: (just like when I say I need to use Oracle, and the reply is "Why not use MySQL?" Answer: my client has five other application which run on Oracle which he has been using for ten years already); Delphi (and Mac) have these issues to face if they want to compete with Windows and the PC; I might use Lazarus (if I didn't already have access to Delphi), but I can't work with it. - If Lazarus is equally good then Delphi is best not touching the Mac (it is partly a commercial issue)! Delphi failed on the PC because there were alternative commercial tools which were equally usable at lower cost or even free: on Linux because it was too expensive in a contexxt with an OpenSource mentality and because the commercial sector does not use Linux much (most recent commercial/industrial networks seem to be Windows based) - Delphi currently can offer AspNet for Intranet and Webservices: I presume Lazarus doesn't though Mono does, so cross platform Web applications would be difficult in Lazarus: this for me is a key issue; if I want to use Linux or Mac, It has to have something like AspNet or nothing, and it has to be a solution that will convince a client that a large scale project can go ahead for years in a professional/industrial context: good GUI, good Database interfacing, Web/Intranet/ good hardware interfacing; (the databases have to include Oracle/MSsql/Interbase and also MySql and possibly SQLite) Cheers Mike ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
