I stalled developing apps in the Win32 world and still find Delphi 7 the
best environment for kicking apps out fast. I too like Delphi 5 since it
was the perfect match or speed and stability, but 7 works fine if you don't
mind the blow ups on exit which only happens to me in complicated apps.
I have written a few apps in .net, but truthfully find it no better for
doing what I do (large medical billing app). If I wrote webforms rather
than winforms, I probably would switch. Also with SQL 2005 putting CLR code
in, I will likely move at some point. That said Delphi has been the best
environment for developing Win32 apps for years. Its future is probably
retirement, but what a great run and it is still unmatched in my opinion
when it comes to community. I find too many newbies in .net/VB giving bad
advice and spamming questions with useless info. Using google news can be a
real pain sometimes, but this generally not true with Delphi.
As for Delphi 2005, I haven't really had an interest in moving. VS is
clearly the number one choice when it comes to .net, but if I were in a
major corporation I wouldn't pass Borland by so quickly with its integrated
environment. VSS is horrible and MS doesn't have an object modeler.
Borland definitely wins in that area, but I don't know how long Borland will
be if they don't get a really good superior IDE out the door. The only way
to stay alive with MS is to have a better product... you aren't going to out
sell or out market them. Ultimately, they need an IDE that can load VS
code, compile it without change, work better, should be faster and supply
superior help.
All IMO of course, Cameron.
