I'm pretty sure it's backwardly compatible with version 5.6.  You should
upgrade to 5.6 immediately, as 5.5 is known to cause database corruption.
An "Internal GDS software consistency check" error means your database _is_
corrupted.  5.6 was a free upgrade to solve this problem - reportedly there
are only benefits, no downsides, to installing it, although you should
always back up databases between upgrades (if you still can :).

You _might_ be able to go straight to version 6 and fix your errors there,
but I would probably go to 5.6 first.  Once you have upgraded to 5.6, run
gfix on your database.  IMO, only once that has finished should you think
about version 6. :)
