Ø I am also a classical musician, and I can tell you as far as I know there is not a single case in history where any composer was guided, inspired or helped by a critic.
Not a professional critic maybe – i.e. people who are paid only to criticise. I also am a musician – kinda (for “fun” I play bass, and I am in a vocalist in a covers band) and I can tell you absolutely that my performance is informed and IMPROVED by people telling me when I am not doing my best. There is a fine line to be drawn, for sure, but no-one ever built a statue of a sycophant either. ;) (look at what George Lucas achieved before he reached the point where no-one ever dared tell him when his ideas were dumb, compared to what he produced afterward) J
