No The VB to VB.net transition is not major, but it is also not a common source code so once you go to VB.net you would have to maintain 2 code bases if you wanted a .net and a win32 version. This has always been part of the M$ strategy ie a not so subtle forcing of .net. acceptance by leveraging off the installed base.
C# is a response to 2 things, firstly M$ had no equivalent to Java ie a modern OO language that was 'portable' across platforms and suitable for middleware development and secondly it probably niggles them the Borland and Delphi exist at all, If you look at some of M$ actions in the last few years (purchasing Great Plains, Xbox, Te new reporting product ) they are 'filling in the gaps' Looking for any IT or related areas they don't control These existed because they had revenues that it wasn't worth M$ bothering with, but M$ is faced with a shareholders requirement for spectacular growth despite the fact that they control a majority of the market, they are running out of head room, and they have huge cash reserves to spend. The Delphi stategy is to have source code portable across platforms (Win32, Linux and now .net). In theory it is great but the biggest problem they face is that they are 'not microsoft' so once M$ provide an alternative (C#) Then most of the pro-Delphi arguements are diluted and Delphi will slowly die ala what Access did to Dbase, Foxpro and Clipper. I'd predict that within 5 years Borland, Seagate Software (Crystal Decisions) and Symantec will be shadows of their former selves. Borland will hang on as a developer of Java Development Products but I'd expect Delphi to be finished. Crystal is a definate target and as a basically single product company is definately at risk. The other 2 I'd look for are Adobe and Macromedia Sad huh, but the god news is the Delphi to C# can't be that bigger jump.
