It's been a while, but IIRC I wanted a reading list mode to not be totally dependent on Pocket. We could sync it to Pocket though, since that fits in nicely with our existing Firefox Sync support, but there should be local storage too.
If support for a more ethical alternative to Pocket, e.g. Wallabag, was added using the same API (note, I don't know how GOA work and I am just assuming things) then the hard dependency on Pocket would be dropped, even though it's not a local solution.
