It makes no difference to wipe cache/data (for reference, I have to wipe /data 
from recovery, since HTC won't let you touch it at all apparently from fastboot)

I've been able to flash CM10 on the same device, since it doesn't have an 
explicit step to flash something over /data, which is where my problem seems to 
lie.

Can you post a link to this manifest you saw there? I did a search on github 
and only found a link to my own fork.
