I really like the "Rooky PR" and for extension I'd rather propse to stay
with "only" top 1.
What we can consider is that we just rather extend categories like
"Providers", "UI" like the Oscars(r) or Nobel Price also have
categories. But maybe before adding too much complexity just start with
a second?

I think we can start with 1 Rookie PR (I like the name) and see if we can
get more candidates - and expand it.
Bold idea: maybe we want to ask people to self-nominate (maybe with a
little bit of nagging behind the scenes ;) )
Having someone like Srabasti or generally - in the future someone who is
relatively new to the community - running it would make it less
intimidating to self nominate and explain your PR. I think this is the most
difficult thing to overcome with new contributors - to be more open and
"public" about your own - even small - PRs, but maybe we can create an
atmosphere of this welcoming and receptive discussion that will make people
more eager to do so. I would really love to see that and get more people
being a little more bold in "public" discourse - this is a very important
part of open-source contributions and this might be a nice way of learning
it.
That's a bit risky though - it's always easier to engage when you see the
list ready - and our script is developed to be somewhat "objectiv-ish" in
pre-selection. Maybe we could update the script to pre-select some of those
rookie-PRs automatically, but naybe would also encourage

This is a great proposal. Something like a Rookie PR would definitely help
make the project feel more welcoming and inclusive. We should definitely
rotate reviewers for Rookie PRs so more maintainers engage with newcomers.
In my opinion, I think we should encourage community nominations instead of
just votes.

Sounds good! I can volunteer to run the "Rookie PRs".
From the discussions above, if we did 3 (instead of 1) Top PRs of the
month, we will cover more contributions impacting Apache Airflow product
space, possibly selecting one each from different categories like UI,
Core,
CI/CD, Helm Charts, AI.
On the other hand, 3 Rookie PRs, can cover a mix of different levels and
categories including documentation, to inspire more newcomers to
contribute.
PS - Whatever the community consensus chooses on the Top "X". 3 is just a
recommendation:)
We can have X "Top PRs" and X "Rookie PRs" of the month.
Thoughts on this?

Do we want to move this to a vote?

Great idea! It would make more tiered approach on selecting the PR of

Long ago, I thought the original one should serve this purpose.
(Probably
not the first one, but their first 10-ish PRs) But yep, love this

Hi,
I like the idea! We always award very big and complex awards and
often
have the problem of really many PRs whcih are elegible.
Having an award for all contributors which had their first PR
is a
cool
idea for an addition.

Hello All,
It is awesome that we have the PR of the Month award to
recognize
the
PR
with the most impact each month, voted by the community.
I would like to propose the addition of another award "Rookie
PR"
(or
any
other name that sounds good to all) to recognize new budding
contributors.
This will be an incentive for newcomers and inspire them to
pick
up
PRs.
In the long run, this will result in reduction of the list of
open
PRs
as
well.
We can make a rule that there will be no repetitions, to ensure
that
new
contributors get a chance each month. This will help increase
awareness
of
open source contributions to Apache Airflow in the community
and
boost
their LinkedIn profiles too (since might be aspiring job
seekers/students).
Thoughts on this?
