It is my understanding that a work is copyrighted automatically,
copyright notice or not, as soon as it exist on any transfer
medium (i.e. not just in my head).

The University of Washington seems to agree with this:

"Copyright protection subsists... in original works of authorship fixed 
in any tangible medium of expression... from which they can be
perceived, 
reproduced, or otherwise communicated, either directly or with the aid
of 
a machine or device." 17 USC �102(a) 


I think this is standard practice internationally. A copyright
notice is *not* needed for copyright protection. You get that
automatically.
