But IIUC disabling the persistent store is the easiest workaround, if so it wouldn't it be better to ship the release with the persistent store disabled?

Mmmh... no, this was revealed by 2.1.4, after I cleaned up the use of store components in the code. Before 2.1.4, that bug was hidden since IIRC content was actually never fetched from the persistent cache...
So this really is a serious issue, and releasing a version without a persistent cache is an IMO an important functionnal limitation.
What's the status of EHCache and JCS? Can't we consider one of them as the default persistent store?
