Hi Juergen,
Actually I was hoping for feedback on http://test.openoffice.org/help ...
I would like to keep the discussion on the very first page at
[EMAIL PROTECTED], where almost everything has been debated
already... I hope you'll understand that.
you are right. I lost focus on the website mailing list after switching
to a new system. My fault. I will fix it ;-)
2. i would move download on top -> maybe place all in one line and
download is the first item from left
The order of the action statements was not a random choice... it is based
on the progression a totally new person is expected to make. They first
want to check out what it is (why should I use it?), then they might
download it, then they might want help... then more features, and in the
end we might even see some of them contributing...
3. the text is too big, too much to read and it is not clear on the
first look what are the differences between the points (at least not for
all)
You maybe right about that... the lead designer still needs to fine tune
font sizes... but we switched for accessibility reasons to expressing font
sizes in em instead of px, which was converted rather sloppy by me.
4. make the symbols bigger, let the symbols speak and make the text
smaller (maybe tool tips)
I think that if the text is smaller, symbols don't have to be bigger.
Actually there has been a debate on removing the symbols :)
mmh, strange. Anyway it was simply my first impression ...
4. a little bit more space after the bullets and the grey footer
I'll ask the designer to look at this... there needs to be a good balance
between when still to show the footer within the window, and when to let
it simply flow...
If in general pages are longer than the window height... we should maybe
consider simply dropping the CSS that makes this possible... I also see
sometimes some problems with this page: http://test.openoffice.org/help
... the footer moves over the text with some screen sizes.
(Did I say it was ready? ;) )
5. i miss a prominent link to the user forum
The user forum is one of the ways of getting help... so here is actually
where I would like to get your feedback...
Do you think that
http://test.openoffice.org/help
does the job better than
http://support.openoffice.org ?
yes, it looks much better. The support page is overloaded from my point
of view. Probably some more high level entry points on the help side can
help to split into different sections. Free user forum help,
documentation, commercial support, consulting, ...
I believe so, for reasons you may read in my previous e-mail ... but
please share your thoughts with me, and others on this list, or simply
start editing the wiki:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Website/Content/help
The first impression is important and we should focus on that. 90% want
simply download the program -> we should concentrate on that and make it
as simply as possible.
The next entry points for me are developers or participate in the
project and users. Cross links from between the different sections
should be possible and we have probably overlaps
As you can see, this design was not a one night affair (and the wiki is
missing still quite a lot of the debates that you may read at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] )
sure and i don't want to be to negative or it shouldn't sound to
negative . As i mentioned before i lost the track and missed the
opportunity to participate in the whole discussion on the website
mailing list.

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Website/Proposals
I don't think that the current proposal makes it hard to download
OpenOffice.org. Although it might not be a in-a-blink-of-a-second affair,
this is not a problem... nobody will download an office suite in the same
way as one grabs a small bag of candies just before checking out a
supermarket. It involves some consideration, and imho we should help users
with making a decision, and not think that an accidental click on the
green button will result in a long term relationship with the OOo product
and community. If you disagree, please turn to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
